Katerina is the daughter of Branislav Sokolov, hereditary Lord-Mayor of a small but prosperous Brevic Town. Twenty-three years ago, as one of the worst storms in memory raged in the Brevic night, her father returned home from his youthful adventuring. His family was surprised to see him, having all but given him up for dead he had been gone so long. He came back changed; harder, more stoic. He had brought with him a small fortune in gold…and a smaller bundle in his arms; his daughter, Katerina. His parents were shocked and questioned him extensively as to who and where the mother was but all they every got from him was stony silence on the issue. Her uncle doubted Katerina’s parentage, but divination magic revealed that she was indeed his niece by blood, though the auguries revealed nothing about her mysterious mother. With proof of her bloodline and her father’s refusal to say any more on the issue her family soon welcomed her into their lives, accepting her as one of their own.
As the sweet young girl grew, she proved to have a bright mind and unusual beauty. Her tutors were impressed with her sharp and curious mind and soon discovered she had a talent for the arcane arts. Her father asked the local wizard, a retired adventurer, to take her under his wing as an apprentice. He fostered in her a deep inquisitiveness and a desire to understand the true nature of magic. After a few years he felt he’d taught her as much as he could…and as he was rather wanting to get back to his own studies, he convinced her parents to send to off to university in Restov.
While at University, she roomed with a bright and eccentric engineering student named Lini. Katerina and the vivacious gnome developed a close friendship even working on their final projects together. Lini kindled an interest in clockworks in Katerina and eventually introduced her to the faith of Brigh, goddess of invention. Even after graduation the two maintain a correspondence via letters.
